A handsome corner site in a plum Trafalgar Square location make an incongruous, though jolly nice setting for Jom Makan’s low-budget Malaysian street food. Prices are higher than at Soho canteens, but in return you get ‘efficient, never overbearing service’, an ‘elegant room’ & decent renditions of classics such as Hainanese chicken rice, nasi goreng & steaming bowls of spicy soup noodles. Quality satay compensates for the absence of rice cakes (Brits don’t eat them, apparently) with superior peanut sauce. Only a small & not very meaty lamb curry seemed mean at £8. To finish, the requisite sugar fix is delivered by slurpy tapioca pudding with palm sugar & coconut cream: the weakness of many a sweet-toothed Malaysian. The heart also lifts to see frothy sweet tea & coffee ‘tarik’ on the menu (even if it is rather watery).
